Not sure which woodwind instrument to choose?

Choosing a first instrument can be difficult. The flute, clarinet and saxophone each have different playing techniques, sound qualities and physical requirements. Many parents hesitate to commit to lessons or purchase an instrument without knowing which one is the best fit. This programme is designed to help you make that decision with confidence.

Rather than starting formal lessons immediately, participants will have the opportunity to experience the fundamentals of all three instruments in a single introductory session before deciding which instrument they would like to pursue.

Who is this programme for?

This programme is suitable for:

• Children aged 5 years and above who are interested in learning a woodwind instrument.

• Parents who would like their child to try the instruments before committing to lessons.

• Teenagers and adults who are considering learning a woodwind instrument.

• Pianists and musicians who would like a practical introduction to woodwind instruments.
   

What happens during the session?

This is a 45-minute introductory exploration session, not a complete beginner course on all three instruments.

Participants will spend time with the flute, clarinet and saxophone to experience how each instrument works and to understand their key differences.

​

Using specially designed NUVO instruments, participants will:

• Produce their first sounds on each instrument.

• Learn basic breath support and embouchure.

• Experience the correct playing posture and hand position.

• Discover the unique tone and character of each instrument.

• Understand the similarities and differences between the flute, clarinet and saxophone.
   

The objective is not to learn three instruments in one lesson, but to gain enough hands-on experience to make an informed choice before beginning regular lessons.

Why use NUVO instruments?

The session uses specially designed NUVO instruments that are lightweight, durable and easy for beginners to handle. They were originally developed for young children with smaller hands, making them an excellent introduction to woodwind playing.

​

Although designed for children, many teenagers and adults have also found them to be an effective way to experience the fundamentals of each instrument before moving on to standard concert instruments.

After the session

At the end of the programme, participants will have a clearer understanding of which instrument best matches their interests, comfort and musical goals. If they choose to continue, they can then begin formal lessons on one instrument with greater confidence.

No prior musical experience is required.
