FAQ on learning Flute

Is the flute difficult to learn?

Many people assume the flute is one of the hardest instruments to start, but that isn't always the case. At FAMA, we've taught thousands of flute students over the years, and many beginners are pleasantly surprised by how much they achieve in just their very first lesson. With the correct posture, breathing technique and embouchure, most students are able to produce their first clear notes much sooner than they expected. Based on our teaching experience, here's how we would rate the overall learning journey (1 = easiest, 5 = most challenging):

Starting difficulty: 3/5
Progression difficulty: 4/5
Maintenance of Instrument + Portability: 2/5

Every student learns at a different pace, but with consistent practice and good teaching, the flute is an instrument that is both enjoyable and rewarding to learn.

How long does it take to learn the flute?

The answer depends on your age, musical background and how consistently you practise.

The estimates below are based on students attending one 45-minute lesson per week while practising regularly at home.

Playing Grade 1 Standard
Teen/Adult with music background:
about 3 months

Teen/Adult with NO music background:
about 6 months

Children between 5 - 12:
about 9 - 24 months

Becoming a Confident Recreational Player (Around ABRSM Grade 5)

Many students consider Grade 5 to be a comfortable level where they can enjoy playing a wide range of pop songs, movie themes, Christmas music and classical repertoire.

Teen/Adult with previous music experience:
about 24 months

Teen/Adult with no music experience:
about 42 months

Children (5–12 years old):
about 45–84 months

These are average timelines based on our students over the years. Individual progress naturally varies depending on age, commitment and practice habits.

A Fun Fact

One statistic that has remained remarkably consistent over the years:

For every 50 students who attend their very first flute lesson, approximately 49 choose to continue with a second lesson. Many beginners arrive believing they won't even be able to produce a sound. Instead, they leave pleasantly surprised by what they can already achieve after learning the correct posture, breathing and embouchure.

How much do flute lessons cost?

Lesson fees vary according to the teacher's qualifications, lesson duration and the student's level.

Do I need to own a flute before starting lessons?

No.

If you're attending a trial lesson, we can provide a flute for you to use, so there's no need to purchase an instrument before trying your first lesson.

Once you decide to continue learning, our teachers will recommend a suitable flute based on your age, musical goals and budget. We believe in recommending the right instrument—not simply the most expensive one. For students who prefer not to purchase immediately, we also offer flute rental, making it easier to begin learning before committing to an instrument.

Do I have to take music examinations?

Not at all.

Examinations are entirely optional and depend on each student's goals.

For younger children, examinations often provide useful milestones that help maintain motivation and build confidence. For teenagers and adults, we usually recommend examinations only if they support your personal learning objectives. Many of our students simply learn for enjoyment without taking any exams.

Will I have opportunities to perform?

Absolutely.

We regularly organise:

  • Annual student concerts

  • Woodwind festivals

These events allow students to build confidence, gain performance experience and enjoy making music together.
