FAQ on learning oboe

Is the oboe difficult to learn?

The oboe is often considered one of the more challenging woodwind instruments, but with proper guidance, beginners are usually surprised by how much they can achieve. At FAMA, we've taught hundreds of woodwind students over the years, and our experienced teachers will guide you step by step through posture, breathing, embouchure and reed control. While the oboe requires a little more patience at the beginning, students who practise consistently often make steady and rewarding progress. Based on our teaching experience, here's how we would rate the overall learning journey (1 = easiest, 5 = most challenging):

Starting difficulty: 4/5

Progression difficulty: 4/5

Maintenance of Instrument + Portability: 4/5

Every student progresses differently, but with regular lessons and consistent practice, the oboe is one of the most expressive and rewarding instruments to learn.

How long does it take to learn the oboe?

The answer depends on your age, previous musical experience and how consistently you practise.

The estimates below are based on students attending one 45-minute lesson each week while practising regularly at home.

How much do oboe lessons cost?

Lesson fees vary according to the teacher's qualifications, lesson duration and the student's level.

Please contact us for our latest fees and lesson schedule.

Do I need to own an oboe before starting lessons?

No.

Students attending a trial lesson may use one of our oboes, so you don't need to purchase an instrument before your first lesson. However, do note that you will need to purchase your own starter kit consisting of reeds before 1st lessons commence for hygiene purposes.

If you choose to continue, our teachers will recommend an oboe that best suits your age, learning goals and budget. We'll guide you through the different options without any pressure to purchase a premium instrument. For students who are not ready to buy immediately, we also offer oboe rental, allowing you to begin learning with confidence.

How much does a good beginner oboe cost?

Starting with a quality instrument makes learning easier, more enjoyable and more rewarding.

Our recommended beginner instruments include:

Most Popular Beginner Models

  • Yamaha

  • Marigaux

  • Josef

Professional Instruments

As students progress, we also work closely with internationally respected makers, including Marigaux, offering professional instruments suitable for advancing musicians. Our teachers are happy to advise on the most suitable oboe based on your age, musical goals and budget.

Do I have to take music examinations?

Not at all.

Examinations are entirely optional and should support your personal learning goals.

For younger children, examinations often provide useful milestones that help build confidence and maintain motivation. For teenagers and adults, we generally recommend examinations only if they help you stay motivated or are required for your personal or academic goals. Many of our students simply learn for enjoyment without taking any exams.

Will I have opportunities to perform?

Absolutely.

We regularly organise:

  • Annual Student Concerts

  • Woodwind Festivals

These experiences help students develop confidence, stage presence and the joy of making music with others.
